The conclusion to the third Ark Royal trilogy! The Second Interstellar War - pitting humans and their Tadpole allies against an enigmatic alien empire - appears to have stalemated. Neither side can push through to the other’s core systems without risking substantial losses, neither side can gain a decisive advantage. But when a brilliant human scientist invents a way to jump across the stars without a gravity tramline, an opportunity arises to strike the enemy in their undefended rear. It is an opportunity that cannot be allowed to pass. Now, HMS Vanguard and her crew - and the largest fleet ever assembled by the nations of Earth - heads out on a do-or-die mission to challenge their enemies to one final battle ... ... And if they lose, they will never see home again.

My biggest complaint about this book was that it was over so quickly. There is a moderately paced beginning to set the stage, and a few afterwords to finish things off. Almost everything in between is non-stop action.

The story is broken into the separate experiences of several main characters. Some of the characters feature more strongly then others, with the most central being Capt. Onarino and 'George' Fitzwilliam. Both characters have solid backgrounds and depth to spare. Often these separate experiences over lap when the action is at its most heated this is woven together so well in this novel that its makes each experience more intense instead of redundant. A perfect example of the whole being greater than the sums of its parts.

Not the best in the series - very derivative of all other Starship battle sci-fi, lots of Weber and White's Starfire series thrown into a blender, and WAY too many of Nutall's signature lines "It could be A - or maybe it could be B. There's no way to know for sure. Or maybe C..."

With many random yet insignificant ideas tossed out and never pursued or followed, definately not his best stuff.

But I bought them all, and am waiting for a random ending (NEW alien race force the Foxes to surrender? Cows are psionic?) in the grand Nutall style.

Not the best of the series. But I did buy and read it.
I found this book very exciting and hard to put down. The book moved easily between the mostly contemporaneous parallel story lines. The multiple story lines' endings were also handled very well and taken to satisfying conclusions. I do hope the author writes and releases at some time a sequel book or three-part series. But as it is, the nine books this far were very good reading. And the conclusion, if it is final, is quite satisfactory.
This wasn't my favorite of the series and that's why it only gets 4 stars. I couldn't ever get behind the character of George Fitzwilliam. I honestly found her annoying. However, I believe this was a personal preference on my part and not a reflection of the writing. With that said I still had a great time with this book and it was a solid conclusion to the latest Ark Royal trilogy. I've read all 9 books and I have really enjoyed how the author has developed this universe. Getting to watch as humanity is stepping into a more crowded and dangerous galaxy and how we adapt to new situations is a lot of fun. If the author writes more Ark Royal books I will be buying them.
Mr. Nutall’s military fiction has always seemed exceptionally realistic. The vast interstellar distances, the populace’s reaction to encounters with aliens and tragedies, the national stance on terrorism, budgets, etc. But for at least the first few books in this series, the character development was very weak.

Then I started reading this final trilogy, and noticed that everything has changed. All of his characters — every single one — had unique and interesting personalities. They struggle, they strive, and they sometimes fail. We feel their pain, and perhaps best of all we feel their surprise and elation when things work out.
Christopher Nuttall brings the interstellar war to a satisfying conclusion. Once again, if you are looking for real descriptions of real people then Nuttall ought to be one of your favorite authors. Though there's plenty of action, the first part of the book is devoted to what happens behind the scenes and you see people with real and complex motives who are neither angels nor demons. Nuttall, unlike some other authors in the SF genre, never makes the mistake of forgetting the people behind the technology and uses his stories to hold a light to our own times. Well worth reading!
Tadpole prime was under attack. Earths forces are by treaty required to assist the Tadpoles as they are attacked by the new alien threat. This is a very aggressive nation which contain two alien forms. One is humanoid with characteristics of cows (I.e. skin, coloring and a placid disposition.) The second group are also humanoid but face and skin covering is fox-like. Their disposition is quite aggressive. Anytime a new group is met, they assume it is a challenge and being fighting. More information about the interaction of these strongly allied humanoid species.

There are several battles between humans and foxes/cows. Some are fought in combination with the tadpoles. Others were humans only, trying maneuvers to surprise the new aliens and stop the war.

For dramatic details and to k ow who actually wins - enjoy reading.
I have really liked the Ark Royal series and I have been reading it since book 1. Mr Nuttall has a way of keeping up the tension while exploring the characters and how they handle different situations. If we ever get into an interstellar war with other species, we can only hope it ends like this series where each side has a need to live in peace.

The Naval stuff is pretty accurate since the British have a long and inspired Naval tradition and if they have a space program like that described in Mr Nuttall's books, I suspect it would be similar.

I see this as the end of the Ark Royal series, at least if I understand what Mr Nuttall said at the end. I have come to enjoy the company of Captain Ocarino, Prince Henry, and Georgina Fitzwilliam. I will miss them but I look forward to the other books Mr Nuttall will write about the Ark Royal universe. I can only hope there will be more to come.

This has been a good series. I highly recommend it for those readers who like a good space opera.
