Young Adults and Baby Boomers will love this lighthearted collection of 18 Linked Short Stories! • Take a trip back to the late Sixties. • Experience Life as a Hippie in Hollywood! • Funny, Suspenseful & Entertaining! • You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll love the trip! Read about the “coming of age” adventures and mishaps of the idealistic young narrator and her realistic companion, Richard. The stories take place in the Hollywood area of Southern California and are based on real experiences. These high interest stories will motivate reluctant readers and inspire conversations. Included at the back of the book are higher level discussion questions for readers and book clubs to gain deeper insight and create lively dialogue. Great for teachers, the questions are not only convenient, but also meet the Common Core State Standards for ELA. The standards are identified and listed with each activity. Perfect for a ready made lesson, the stories may be read independently, and are handy for substitute teachers. The author, a baby boomer herself, originally told these stories to her high school students who asked to hear them again and again! She promised to include them in a book someday. This is the book they requested! Welcome to the 1960s! The stories are appropriate for ages 12 - Adult and for grades 7 - 12.

Can a person who has, for a quarter of a century, been enriched by this author’s friendship remain objective in critiquing Hippies of Hollywood? In answer to this query, I submit the following: this book is accessible to any teenager or adult, but those desiring either a glorification or condemnation of the counterculture of the late 1960s should look elsewhere. Autobiographical in nature, this series of stories tells of one who was neither seduced by idealism nor turned against it completely. The reader will encounter a young woman who experiences terror at being assaulted, is awed by the unbridled emotion of a rock concert, and comes to know the satisfaction of comforting a gravely ill young man. The ordinary, the eccentric, and the humorous--all this will be found in a work suitable for being devoured while on a flight from Chicago to Los Angeles or being consumed piecemeal over a series of weeks in a classroom. For those born prior to 1955, this text is sure to revive dormant memories. Are you a teacher seeking material for a lesson dealing with America of the late 1960s? Do you instead desire, with your students, to explore the collision between preconceived notions and actual experience? In whole or in part, Hippies of Hollywood can serve a valuable function in any such educational endeavors. – John Demetralis; Chicago, Illinois/March 2015

Hippies of Hollywood Stories from the Sixties V M Brott MEd Books Reviews

I loved the stories, especially "The Elevator Ride." It had some awesome lines in it. I especially liked the one about the angel and devil meeting to do battle. "Santa Ana Winds" conjured up a feeling of fear!. I visualized it in more detail. It ran in my head like a scary movie.
Great stories! Each one made me want to read more.
I used this book with my 7th grade students. It held the interest of even my most hyper kids. I assigned the questions from the back of the book, and let them work in groups. I overheard some lively conversations. They were fun, but also stimulated some thoughtful analysis. I plan to use this book again next year. Tip kids will want to copy or trace some of the clip art, so keep drawing paper available!
This book is a great read! The stories keep you intrigued and coming back for more. Once I got it, I couldn't put it down. The characters are loveable and realistic and it gives you some insight to the Hollywood scene during the 60's. It makes me think about my own youth and the lessons I learned. I really liked how the stories within the book read as a novel. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I LOVE the poem at the beginning. I enjoyed all the stories and adventures. They are tight and move along well. The clip art really adds to the experience of reading the stories. The stories are fairly easy to follow, allowing struggling readers to determine the meaning of the vocabulary. Gives readers a good idea of what being a "hippie" in Southern California was really like.
Love this book it was great to read keep me wanting to read the next chapter
Well written and entertaining! Perfect for classroom use or relaxing entertainment! Highly recommend!!
