Rippers Daughter review by JLNicky
A sadistic serial killer on the loose in Boston has the PD on the hunt. Although technically on the case, Detective Colby Willis has become a drunken, drugged out officer, fighting the guilt and failure of saving one of the Rippers Daughter victims, her own partner Marty Walsh. Clearly on a downward spiral Colby chases the violent and twisted serial killer, while dealing with her inner demons and failures. The most important failure, of which may be saving Jesse Walsh, Marty's daughter who was included as an accomplice to the murder of her own father and who now lives out her own personal hell in a mental institution.
The plot is very strong and compelling (i.e. serial killer, cop, victims, and some ghostly haunting moments) involving a detective who is struggling to survive her twisted sanity and catch a serial killer while fighting everyone around her. She has a grim and foreboding feeling about the killer and each time she feels close to the answer she melts down in some fashion unable to recall or get to the answer she seeks. But she knows someone who can help.
The setting is urban and inner city reality with crime, sex, drugs, and graphic horror painted on every strip of landscape. The use of dirty snow covered streets with the snow blowing street sweep laboring closer and closer to an unknown victim. Or entering the deep recesses of a mental institution with prison locking gate systems that makes your heart pump faster the deeper you go. You just know each landscape builds the current scenario into the crescendo of the next element of the story.
The characters are well thought out and definitely charismatic, having suffered for years in various fashions of abuse/abandonment/unrequited love. Colby and Jesse are immediately connected with flashes to the past and sizzling erotic moments. There is a compelling ghostly visit or two from her murdered partner. The victims have their thoughts shown in the last waning hours of life. And some of the dialogs were just fascinating to read and explore; morbid comic relief and all.
The multiple conflicts are all addressed at the right moments and at the right speed. Colby's growing knowledge of the killer, Jesse and Colby's romance/heated relationship, Colby's struggle with guilt, the pressure of the story grows and grows.
The theme of this book is defiantly met as Speculative including horror and ghostly paranormal. The blood drips from word one. The violence is sharp and stabbing with its direct no nonsense view from the bland voices of dispassionate cops giving descriptions as they standing over the dead mutilated bodies. I recommend this horror read to those that like to be served the rawest of meats and the most potent of drink as they watch the storm lightening strike the bare trees through the living room window.
Police Detective, Colby Willis, is a shadow of her former self. Since the murder she feels she should have prevented of her mentor, Marty Walsh, Jack Daniel's has become her best friend. Plus Colby is suffering from uncontrollable seizures and blackouts, she has whole chunks of time unaccounted for. Time she has no idea of where she's been or what she's done.
Colby is currently investigating a series of grim murders, committed by a person the press have named `The Ripper's Daughter'. This unknown subject picks a random victim, mutilates them in unimaginable ways, glues their mouths closed and leaves them to die, right near where an unsuspecting person could easily find the body.
Colby is also eaten up with guilt by her failure to protect the woman she loved, Jessie Walsh, Marty's daughter. Colby knew she had been incarcerated in a mental asylum and left her there. She had no idea of what Jessie was going through, she abandoned her.
Colby is certain that Jessie knows the killers identity. An arrangement is made for her to meet Jessie and her lawyer for a visit at the asylum. Both Jessie's lawyer and Colby are horrified by Jessie's condition and decide to remove her immediately from the institution. It's Colby's task to keep Jessie safe and secure until a new place is found for her.
Colby is desperately trying to recall things from the past, things that may help with the case. Also she has to coerce Jessie into divulging the name of the killer. Will Colby remember, or will she be too late to save both herself and Jessie from becoming the killers next victim?
A fast paced, grisly, gruesome, thrilling, chilling and intriguing detective story that is so dark, it's black. This story is not for the faint hearted, or for anyone who suffers from a nervous disposition. It's pure terror at it's finest. Best read when not alone.
The scenic descriptions are graphic and horrifying. The storytelling is at it's best and leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination.
I loved the two main characters, Colby and Jessie. They are two people who have suffered horribly in their lives and their pasts have a bearing on the present time and possibly their future. They interact well together. The rest of the characters fit in well and are essential in moving the story along.
I have to say, although I really enjoyed this book and the story is one of the best in it's genre I've read in a long time, the editing rather let it down. The odd typo or two can easily be forgiven, but this book has more than a few. But having said that, if you can get past the typos, the story is well worth the effort.
A wonderful book that is very intriguing.
This seem slow to me but the story line was great...its been a long time since i have had a story stump me....
If you are looking for a typical love at first at sight lesbian romance, look elsewhere. The interaction between these two protagonists is sometimes cringe worthy as they grudgingly work together to solve a series of ghastly murders. The whole will-they-won't they gives the story a cunning edge. The dialogue is what I enjoyed the most. It is beautifully harsh and well written at every turn. The authors at Shirtless Girl have certainly been churning out some amazing work.
The story was great. I would have given five stars for the story, but the editing... not so much. It seriously distracted me.
If you are looking for a break from the typical lesbian genre, this is the book for you. All the elements of a quality thriller are meticulously exhibited. From grisly murders, to stunning personal revelations, the reader is lead through the darkest depths of the imagination to identify who is behind these graphic, imaginative, and tortuous killings.
